Who doesn’t want long, luscious lashes? They make our eyes seem so much bigger and sexier! While falsies offer us zero commitment and instant gratification, they are high maintenance and pricey for daily wear. And while mascara is the least expensive option, it leaves a little to be desired. For these reasons, there are a ton of salons and spas offering services that provide a more permanent option. While you might have noticed all the gorgeous (NO WAY are those real!) lash extensions in just about every makeup tutorial on Instagram, you have probably started to notice another lash transformation called the Lash Lift. It is time for us to give proper acknowledgment, a spotlight and standing ovation to this amazing, newer service. Lash Lifts make your lashes look instantly longer and fuller. AND this service is much less expensive and requires a lot less maintenance than extensions. Here’s how the two compare:

LASH EXTENSIONS
Just like hair extensions, if you find yourself envying someone’s lash volume, curl and length, don’t get too jealous, they are probably enhanced. But that’s not a bad thing! Lash extensions are artificial lashes, usually made of silk, that are attached to your real eyelashes with an adhesive. This is a highly customizable service, letting you pick the length, thickness, and curl of your lashes. They need to be refilled every two to three weeks to maintain the full look, but the full look is well worth the visits.

Lash extensions require a lot more upkeep than lash lifts and the frequent fills required might not fit in with your schedule. Similar to artificial nails and hair extensions, it can become pretty noticeable when you can’t keep up with the constant care. Not to mention the delicate nature to maintaining these great lash enhancements. You have to really try to avoid rubbing and touching your eyes to prevent your natural lashes from falling out and creating gaps in the lash line while being mindful to carefully clean them and avoid products that can break down the lash adhesive. There can be a long list of no-no’s to keep these luscious lashes looking, well…luscious.

LASH LIFT AND TINT: THE NATURAL
Lash lifts are the more natural option, giving wimpy eyelashes a much-needed lift and curl. Extensions provide a similar effect, but with lifts, you don't have to worry about the heavy look that can sometimes come with extensions. Think of it as a perm for your lashes. Basically, you cleanse the lashes and comb them up to take the shape of a little silicone shield that’s attached to the eyelid. A perm solution is applied, softening the lashes so they’re moldable. This is left on for up to 12 minutes depending on how well your client’s hair holds curl. After which a setting solution is used to lock the shape in. Just like with any chemical service, it is important to apply with care and not over process the lashes to avoid becoming brittle and dry.

The lift results can last as long as 12 weeks, which is pretty amazing. Tinting after the lift can add color and depth to your lash line, which is perfect if you want to look your best for a low-maintenance vacation. The tint part lasts fewer weeks than the lift, so don’t toss that mascara out just yet. Your lashes will drop evenly and won’t look out of place.

COST COMPARISON
Of course, your falsies and your fave mascara are the most cost effective, a lash lift will typically cost between $100 and $150, and the effect usually lasts for around eight to twelve weeks. At this point, your new lashes that are growing in start to replace the treated set you are wearing making the time between appointments easier to look at. Extensions will set you back anywhere between $150 and $200 and they only last between two and four weeks (depending on how you care for them). Lash lifts are super low maintenance. Unlike lash extensions, you won’t need to pay to have them filled every few weeks or removed.
